Environmental protection and lubricated systems.

How lubricated systems impact the environment;

In Europe alone, failure to protect lubricant reservoirs with the proper desiccant breathers leads directly or indirectly to economic losses totalling around EUR200 billion.
Some of these losses are caused by equipment repair and replacement. For example, free water in lubricating oil decreases the life of rolling element bearings anywhere from ten to more than a hundred times.

Much of these losses are caused when increasingly expensive contaminated oil has to be replaced.
=> More than 60% of oil or lubricants did not reach 50% of their optimal duration; that represents an over-production by a factor of four of hazardous oil waste.
=> More than 50% of the contaminants found in industrial oils come from (directly or indirectly) external dust and humidity that pass through simple breathers.
=> The bad quality of simple air breathers generates an over-production of wear and an over-consumption of inline oil filters by at least a factor of two, leading to more waste filters (which are also classified as hazardous waste).
=> More than 75 percent of hydraulic system failures result from contaminated fluid caused by particulate and water introduction through the breather cap.
=> The most common cause cited for denial of warranty claims in hydraulic systems is contamination.
=> Lubrication failure is the #1 reason for gearbox returns during the warranty period.

Unnecessary oil consumption has a direct impact on:
=> Global warming: Lubricants contaminated by dust and water drastically decrease the efficiency of lubricated systems. This decrease in efficiency may cause roughly 20% over-consumption of electricity and an over-production of the greenhouse gases CO2 and NOx.
=> Environmental pollution: Contaminated oil generates excess hazardous waste in the form of millions of litres of oil and millions of replacement filter elements.

What rules are established by WBCSD* for environmental protection?

*The WBCSD is a coalition of 120 multinational corporations from 33 countries, representing more than 20 major industrial sectors.

Pollution prevention is defined as "...the use of processes, practices, material, products or energy that avoid or minimize the creation of pollutants and waste and reduce overall risk to human health or the environment."

Pollution prevention encompasses activities that minimize or eliminate the creation of pollutants and wastes at the source. Pollution prevention is achieved, for example, by process redesign or modification, in-process recycling; raw materials substitution, improved maintenance and operations.

Some of the benefits to be realized by plants undertaking pollution prevention initiatives, in the field of lubricated systems, include:
=> Reduced operating costs and extending lubricant and equipment life (optimization for lubricants and mechanical components, reduce shut down and failures)
=> Better protection of the environment and public health (create less polluants, less filter waste, less oils disposal and components replacements)
=> Enhanced corporate image
=> Increased employee safety
=> Reduced risk of criminal and civil liability (protecting employee health by stopping harmful oil fumes generated by lubricated reservoirs)

How Des-Case breathers protect the environment and why they are "green" products

Des-Case breathers are designed and built in perfect harmony with rules established by the WBCSD. Des-Case breathers help customers having lubricated systems (hydraulic reservoirs, gearboxes, electrical transformers, and storage reservoirs) do the following:
=> Directly protect environment against pollution. Breathers reduce waste oil and waste oil filters.
=> Work against global warming. Breathers help maintain optimal lubricant quality, thereby helping maintain a high level of efficiency in lubricated systems. Efficient, optimized systems produce fewer greenhouse gases.
=> Decrease human impact on natural resources. More efficient systems by definition consume less oil. Machines that do not need frequent repair or replacement reduce steel consumption as well.
=> Generate profits for industry. More efficient systems lead to reduced costs.
=> Protect health and safety of employees. Des-Case Europe breathers are in conformity with European directives concerning the protection of worker health such as REACH. Those conformities are officially assumed by DESCASE Europe for breathers with the DESCASE Europe and CE logo.
